Bluebell BN328 Fibre Transport Solutions for International Sports Commentary Positions

In international sports production, commentary positions are a critical part of the overall broadcast workflow. They must reliably receive programme video for live monitoring and commentary, while simultaneously handling official timing, scoring, and event data with accurate synchronisation. As productions scale across larger venues and more complex infrastructures, maintaining low latency, stability, and signal integrity becomes increasingly challenging.
For a recent international sports broadcast project, Beijing Radio Broadcast Innovation Technology Co., Ltd. worked alongside a third-party event production team to deploy a commentary position transmission solution based on the Bluebell BN328 fibre transport platform. The system was used to deliver stable transmission of primary and backup PGM SDI video signals, along with official timing and scoring IP data, between the outside broadcast (OB) truck and a remote commentary position within the venue.
System Overview
The solution was designed around a single-fibre infrastructure capable of carrying multiple signal types while maintaining logical separation. Two uncompressed SDI programme feeds were transported to provide both primary and backup monitoring signals at the commentary position, ensuring continuity during live operation. In parallel, official timing and scoring data generated by the event’s CIS system was transmitted as IP data to support subtitles and real-time information displays.
By consolidating these signals onto a single fibre link, the system reduced cabling requirements while preserving signal independence and performance.

Transmission Architecture
At the OB truck, programme video and operational data were fed into the BN328 and delivered to the commentary position over a unified fibre connection. Video signals remained uncompressed to maintain image quality and minimise latency, supporting real-time monitoring and live commentary workflows. IP-based timing and scoring data was transparently transported alongside video, ensuring reliable delivery without compromising data integrity.
This “single physical link, multiple logical paths” approach reduced the risk of synchronisation issues commonly associated with multi-link transmission designs, particularly in large and technically dense venue environments.
Operational Performance
During live event operation, the system performed reliably, continuously delivering programme feeds and official event data with no transmission-related interruptions or noticeable latency. Commentators were provided with clear, stable video and accurately synchronised timing and scoring information throughout the event, supporting smooth and efficient on-air operation.
Value for Sports Production Environments
The BN328-based commentary position solution delivered several key benefits:
- Reliable transport of primary and backup programme video
- Low-latency delivery of official timing and scoring data
- Single-fibre transmission reducing on-site cabling complexity
- Clear separation of video and data within a unified transport path
- Flexible deployment suited to complex venue layouts and temporary installations

Conclusion
This international sports production demonstrates how the Bluebell BN328 fibre transport solution can provide a stable, efficient architecture for commentary position connectivity. By carrying programme video and operational data over a single fibre link, the system improved reliability, synchronisation, and operational efficiency, making it well suited to modern sports production environments where performance and simplicity are equally critical.
